An obituary that appeared in the '
Loughborough Echo' of 21st November 1952, described the deceased as follows:

“A grand old character in the history of Loughborough”

“bluff and genial personality”

“early education at a private school”

“entered the College of Surgeons and Physicians, Dublin, where he gained his degrees”

“In the field of sport he was a prominent figure, particularly in rugby football and boxing”

“played a number of [rugby] games for Ireland”

“For some time he was the 12 stones amateur boxing champion for Ireland”

The obituary was describing Dr Ninian Boggs McIntyre Blackham, who died on 18th November 1952, having moved from Loughborough to Woodhouse only a few years previously. Dr Blackham was born in County Dublin, and came to Loughborough in 1891 to take up the position of assistant to Dr Corcoran, who was the Medical Officer of Health at the time. When Dr Corcoran died in 1911, Dr Blackham took on the role of Medical Officer of Health, and remained in post until 1937, but only fully retiring from medical practice in 1945 at the age of 85.

The same newspaper also reports that at the time of his death, in November 1952, Dr Blackham's:

"name has been commemorated for all time by a new street being named after him"
