When is an Albert not royal?

If you were to look in the street index on this blog for streets related to Albert, you'd find a few [1], and it's very likely you'd presume they were named after Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria. Like other towns and cities, Loughborough has many streets commemorating royalty, and since there was much house-building in Loughborough during the reign of Queen Victoria, it is no surprise that many of the street names are related to the family at the time. So, we have Albert Street, Victoria Street, Albany Street, Arthur Street, William Street, York Road, Windsor Road, King Edward Road, and so on.

Knowing this, you might expect that the unusually named Albert Promenade - unusual in that often a promenade is often more associated with a seaside town, or somewhere picturesque, rather than an industrial, red-brick town - to have similar royal connections. However, ‘Albert Prom’, as it is known locally, is an attractive, tree-lined, which was actually named after Albert Ball.

This tree-lined street was once part of the park associated with the Elms Estate, which was at one time the home of the prominent Warner family, who were local hosiers. The Albert, after whom Albert Prom is apparently named, was Albert Ball, the son of Nottingham-born Albert Ball, who in 1901 was a 'dealer in landed estates', living in Nottingham, who later bought the Elms Estate. Albert Ball junior served in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War, and was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.

Today, Albert Promenade consists of a wide variety of residential properties, the earliest of which - Oak Villa and Ash Villa - were built in 1908, before Albert Promenade was fully laid out, and the latest post-1960.

Notes

[1] There is also an Albert Terrace, which has not been included in this blog, as it is a small courtyard off High Street and Baxter Gate, which has recently been re-developed.
